According to the late master Paramahansa Ramakrishna, OM, also spelled AUM, is Trinitarian in Nature. The letter A symbolizes the material plane. The letter U symbolizes the astral or subtle material plane. And, the letter M symbolizes the causal or purely archetypal plane. So, AUM (OM) completely represents “all that is”.

According to Ramakrishna, the Absolute expands out and then contracts back to itself. So, from the Absolute, it expands through the causal, next to the astral, and then out to the physical. So, our current state of existence is fully manifested, says Ramakrishna. So, the way back to the Absolute is to chant OM (AUM), because dynamically, the chant is a movement of energies back to the center or Absolute. A takes us from the physical to the astral, symbolized by U, and then to the causal, symbolized by M, and then from there all is reconciled back to the Absolute Plane of Existence.
