The Importance of the Sun

The Sun, pictured above setting over the beautiful city of Naples, Florida, USA, is actually a powerful soul that we take for granted. According to some of the Himalayan Spiritual Masters, the Sun is an extremely advanced soul that occupies the spiritual “occupation” or “dharma” of the Sun. The Sun’s light, despite all hard scientific information and evidence of it being only hydrogen and helium combustion, is actually the ontological presence of this divine being, who we all might believe is an angel of some kind, directly empowered by God Almighty. Well, actually, this viewpoint is not all that incorrect.
According to Hindu belief, the name of the deity that we call the Sun is “Surya”. From the perspective of Vedanta philosophy, Surya is an extremely and highly evolved and developed soul, so powerful that his presence is what allows for the Sun to manifest physically and emit its light, heat, and other energies. And of course all living beings here on Earth are sustained by the presence of the Sun, or Surya, which is what propels all movement of the air, water, and elements.
I love to visit the west coast of Florida and watch the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico. It is awe-inspiring and highly metaphysical. I encourage everyone from around the world to thank the Sun, especially those of you who are willing to see the Sun’s Divinity, for its continuous presence that allows for life on our planet Earth. Every day the sun rises and sets over the horizon, we should say “Thank You, Blessed Sun”. To appreciate the Sun is to revere life and all of its amazing wonders.
The following poem written by the late Swami Rama, a Self-Realized Himalayan Master, demonstrates what it is like to revere the Sun’s Divinity:
Oh brilliant orb within the sky,
My soul and breath to thee do fly.
Thou art the refuge of my speech,
Attainable, within my reach.
Thou art the slayer of my foes,
The vanquisher of all my woes,
Thy light illumines all my sin,
A fortress do I find within.
All illness and disease do fly,
When upon thee I rely.
All weakness and fatigue are gone,
When I discern the brilliant sun.
You nourish me and give me rest,
Thy beauty and thy grace attest.
In thy presence I do feel
All my wounds and sorrow heal.
Thou art the source from which I come
And return when I succumb.
My fears and worries fly away
When I am brought beneath thy sway.
Eternally thy name is Om,
Where the Vedas find their home.
A thousand rays from thee proceed
To satisfy my every need.
Thou dost my life and breath sustain,
Nourishment from thee I gain.
Thou art the refuge of the wise,
Fearlessly, thy love does guise.
Salutations do I bring
To that from which my life does spring.
Salutations do I give
To that which makes my soul to live.
Salutations do I leave
To that which stops my soul to breathe,
And salutations to that flame,
Where death no longer can one claim.
May auspiciousness attend
The one who knows thee as thy friend.
Eternally, thy light does shine,
Thy nature is to all divine.
