According to Swami Yukteswar (pictured above), the guru of Paramahansa Yogananda, OM is the Holy Name and Holy Essence of the Absolute Truth, or God, depending upon your individual approach to truth. His book “Holy Science” has been one of my very favorites over the years. Essentially, “Holy Science” was written upon the direct request of his guru’s guru, or the legendary Babaji who has lived in the Himalayan Mountains in secret for over 1600 years, since around 400 A.D. Yogananda also describes his meeting with Babaji in his book “Autobiography of a Yogi”.

The sacred path of Kriya Yoga is the path of liberation given by Babaji to the Mahasaya, Yukteswar, and Yogananada lineage, and there are many qualified practitioners today who can teach you the basics of Kriya Yoga, like Roy Eugene Davis and Sankara Saranam. For those of you who think that “Holy Science” is just some “cult” or “new age” group, I encourage you to read the words here of Swami Yukteswar, who has directly experienced the Absolute Truth firsthand through his Kriya Yoga mastery.

Our lives are loaded with countless relative and transitory experiences and if you are lucky enough, you will question everything one day and say to yourself “OK, now I have experienced many, many things which have come and passed, but what is THAT which endures and is everlasting?” For those of you with this sincere question in mind, I give you Sutra 3 or Swami Yukteswar’s book “Holy Science”:

Parambrahman (Divine Spirit) causes creation, inert Nature (Prakriti), to emerge. From OM (also called Pranava or The Word, the manifestation of the Omnipotent Force) come Kala (Time), Desa (Space), and Anu, the Atom (the vibratory structure of creation).

The Word, OM, is the beginning of Creation. The manifestation of Omnipotent Force (the Repulsion and its complementary expression, Omniscient Feeling or Love, the Attraction) is vibration, which appears as a peculiar sound: the Word OM (Amen). In its different aspects, OM presents the idea of change, which is Time (Kala) in the Ever-Unchangeable; and the idea of division, which is Space (Desa), in the Ever-Indivisible.

The Four Major Ideas are the Word, Time, Space, and the Atom. The ensuing effect is the idea of particles, the innumerable atoms, patra, or anu. These four - the Word, Time, Space, and the Atom - are therefore one and the same, and substantially nothing but mere ideas.

This manifestation of the Word (becoming flesh, the external material) created this visible world. So, the Word OM (Amen) being the manifestation of the Eternal Nature of the Almighty Father or His Own Self, is inseparable from and nothing but God Himself as the burning power is inseparable from and nothing but the fire itself. See John, Verse 1 of the Bible: “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. All things were made by him and without him was not anything made that was made. And, the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.”

OM Shanti & Namaste, Keith
