Five Reasons to Practice Detachment

Detachment is a tenet of not only Buddhism, but many other spiritual paths as well. Here are five reasons which universally recommend that we practice detachment.

One. A Chance for reflection. As you detach from a situation, you have a new chance to examine it and review it, allowing you to gain new insights and perspective.

Two. A Chance for rest. Perhaps you have been working hard at your job, so some time off will allow you to really rest and catch up on other things you haven’t been able to do.

Three. Positive Reconnect. After you have detached from a situation for a while, your “reconnect” experience will usually be well received by others, and so you will be recognized and people will say “hey we missed you, welcome back.”

Four. Overcome Obstacles. Perhaps before you were trying to accomplish something, but failed. So, some detachment from the situation will enable you to harness new energy and perhaps return only to finally complete what you could not beforehand. Indeed, stepping away proved valuable.

Five. Happiness. People who are partially detached from things are alot happier than people who let the weight of the world drag them down. Fortunately, many of our worries are mirages and so detachment gives us a chance to let these illusions dissipate, only to find that we are well in both body and mind and so welcome life as it unfolds each day.

All The Best, Keith
